ZSE edges higher as selective buying lifts property and industrial counters

HARARE — Zimbabwean equities opened the week on a firmer footing, with the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange’s All Share Index gaining 0.22% on Monday as selective buying lifted property, financial and consumer counters despite subdued turnover.

The All Share Index closed at 453.95 points, while the ZSE Top 10 rose 0.05% and the Top 15 gained 0.04%. The Mid Cap Index was stronger, advancing 0.88%, while the Small Cap Index was unchanged.

Trading remained relatively light, with 94 trades generating ZWG5.06 million in turnover. Total market capitalisation stood at ZWG101.20 billion, up from the previous session’s ZWG100.96 billion.

Analysts speaking to The Zimbabwe Financial Mail said the session reflected selective portfolio repositioning rather than a broad-based market rally.

“Investors are still being highly selective. The modest movement in the headline index masks much larger price changes in individual counters,” one market analyst said. “That is typical of a market where investors are focusing on company-specific earnings, valuations and corporate developments.”

Property counters lead gains

The property sector was the strongest part of the market, with the Real Estate Index rising 2.25%. Tigere REIT gained 0.12% to 114.96 cents, while Revitus REIT remained unchanged at 213.25 cents.

Among individual equities, SACL was the day’s biggest gainer, rising 13.88% to 6.26 cents. TNCI gained 7.26% to 55 cents, WILD advanced 7.17% to 7.01 cents and Mashonaland Holdings climbed 5.94% to 155 cents.

CBZ Holdings gained 1.21% to 3,889.15 cents, helping the Financials Index edge 0.11% higher.

The Agriculture Index was virtually flat, easing 0.01%, while consumer staples gained 0.06%. The New Industrial Index and Consumer Discretionary Index were unchanged.

The ETF Index slipped 0.26%.

On the downside, FBC fell 3.08%, Ariston Holdings declined 2.67% and NMB dropped 2.50%. Seed Co was marginally lower at 426.95 cents.

Investors weigh earnings against monetary reforms

The market is entering a significant corporate reporting period, with FML’s half-year unaudited results published on Monday following recent disclosures from RTG, Delta Corporation and Revitus.

Analysts said the results season is likely to increasingly influence share-price performance as investors assess whether companies are converting Zimbabwe’s improving macroeconomic stability into stronger earnings and cash flows.

“Earnings are becoming increasingly important in determining valuations,” a second analyst told The Zimbabwe Financial Mail. “The market cannot rely indefinitely on monetary or inflation-related repricing. Companies ultimately have to demonstrate stronger operating performance.”

The equity market is also operating alongside Zimbabwe’s continuing monetary reforms aimed at strengthening the domestic financial system around the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG).

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s development of ZiG-denominated money-market instruments is creating additional avenues for banks, corporates and institutional investors to manage local-currency liquidity. A deeper domestic money market could eventually influence how savings are allocated between short-term financial assets, property and equities.

For listed companies, the significance extends beyond share prices. A more developed domestic capital market could provide businesses with additional avenues for raising long-term capital, particularly if institutional savings become more deeply integrated into local financial markets.

“Zimbabwe needs to move from monetary stabilisation towards financial intermediation that supports investment,” a banking analyst said. “The equity market, the ZiG money market and longer-term capital markets should eventually form part of the same financial architecture.”

Monday’s session nevertheless showed that investors remain cautious. With just ZWG5.06 million changing hands across 94 trades, the market continues to lack the depth required for broad-based price discovery.

The modest rise in market capitalisation, combined with stronger movements in selected counters, suggests investors are continuing to reposition portfolios selectively while waiting for clearer signals from corporate earnings, monetary policy and the wider economy.
