ZSE Rally Puts Investor Focus Back on Earnings as VFEX Retreats

HARARE — Zimbabwe equities rebounded sharply on Wednesday, with the ZSE All Share Index gaining 2.15% as investors piled into selected consumer, industrial and agricultural counters, while the US-dollar-denominated VFEX moved in the opposite direction.

The divergence highlights a market increasingly split between investors seeking local-currency growth opportunities and those prioritising hard-currency exposure as Zimbabwe’s monetary reforms reshape corporate valuations.

ZSE market capitalisation rose to ZWG105.70 billion, while turnover more than quadrupled to ZWG17.93 million from ZWG4.21 million in the previous session. The exchange recorded 96 trades.

The ZSE Top 10 gained 2.34%, the Top 15 advanced 2.14% and the Mid Cap Index rose 1.39%, signalling broad participation beyond a handful of large counters.

Analysts who spoke to The Zimbabwe Financial Mail said the stronger turnover was potentially more significant than the headline index gain because it suggested renewed investor appetite for selected companies with identifiable earnings prospects.

“Investors are increasingly separating genuine operating growth from nominal gains associated with currency movements,” a Harare-based equities analyst said. “The next test is whether this improvement in turnover can be sustained.”

BAT, Ariston lead the advance

British American Tobacco Zimbabwe was the day’s strongest gainer, surging 15% to ZWG16,675, while Ariston Holdings rose 14.92% to ZWG7.81.

GB Holdings gained 9.85%, TNCI rose 8.05% and SACL advanced 4.67%.

The gains came as companies continued releasing half-year financial information, giving investors more evidence with which to assess earnings, cash generation and dividend prospects.

The Consumer Staples Index rose 3.88%, while the Modified Consumer Staples Index gained 3.41%. The Agriculture Index advanced 3.79%.

Financials added 0.67%, while the Mining Index was flat.

The Real Estate Index was the major drag, falling 1.92%.

“The earnings season is becoming increasingly important for stock selection,” another analyst told The Zimbabwe Financial Mail. “Investors need to see whether companies are converting Zimbabwe’s improved macroeconomic stability into sustainable real earnings and cash flows.”

VFEX tells a different story

The recovery on the ZSE contrasted sharply with trading on the Victoria Falls Stock Exchange, where the VFEX All Share Index fell 0.72% to 269.35 points.

VFEX market capitalisation stood at US$8.23 billion, with turnover of US$1.04 million from 228 trades.

Seed Co International fell 19.13%, Invictus Energy dropped 16.32% and Caledonia Mining declined 14.46%. Fidelity Life fell 5.42%, while African Infrastructure Development Investment Fund lost 4.93%.

The contrasting sessions underline the different investment propositions offered by Zimbabwe’s two exchanges.

The ZSE provides exposure to companies priced in the domestic currency, while VFEX offers US-dollar-denominated securities and is designed to attract foreign investment and facilitate hard-currency capital raising.

“The ZSE and VFEX are increasingly becoming two different investment propositions,” the analyst said. “The ZSE is more sensitive to domestic liquidity and currency expectations, while VFEX gives investors a harder-currency benchmark.”

Currency reform becomes an equity-market test

The divergence comes as Zimbabwe continues efforts to strengthen the ZiG and develop a more predictable monetary environment.

For listed companies, exchange-rate stability matters because it affects imported inputs, pricing decisions, working capital, debt servicing and ultimately shareholder returns.

Analysts said a more credible monetary framework could strengthen the role of Zimbabwe’s capital markets by allowing investors to place greater emphasis on company fundamentals rather than currency protection.

“The real objective should be to move capital allocation away from currency speculation and towards productive investment,” the first analyst said. “That would make the stock market more useful to companies seeking long-term funding and to investors seeking genuine returns.”

Wednesday’s market performance therefore offers an encouraging signal, but not yet confirmation of a sustained recovery.

For investors, the key questions remain whether turnover can deepen, whether corporate earnings can continue to improve and whether monetary stability can translate into a more predictable investment environment.
