BULAWAYO – A Bulawayo woman identified as Xoli Mkhize has died at Mpilo Central Hospital after succumbing to severe injuries sustained during what witnesses and friends believe was a hate-fuelled mob attack targeting her sexual orientation.
Hospital sources confirmed that Mkhize was admitted following the assault and arrived under police escort.
“She was brought in with extensive injuries consistent with a violent physical attack, and there were signs that she may have been sexually assaulted before admission,” said a medical staff member at Mpilo Central Hospital, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Despite intensive treatment, her condition remained critical, and she sadly passed away.”
Friends and community members described Mkhize as a warm, open-hearted woman, saying she had endured growing hostility in her neighbourhood due to her identity as a lesbian.
“This tragedy reflects the deep-seated intolerance and hatred that still exist in our society,” said one close friend. “Xoli was peaceful and kind — she didn’t deserve this.”
Adding to the distress, Mkhize’s partner, Rashel Sibanda, has reportedly been missing for several days. Friends say her disappearance may be linked to the attack.
“No one has seen Rashel, and her phone has been unreachable,” said another associate. “We fear the worst.”
Human rights advocates and local civic organisations have condemned the attack, calling on authorities to conduct a full investigation and to strengthen protections for vulnerable and marginalised groups.
As of publication time, police had not yet released an official statement or confirmed any arrests related to the case.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage in Bulawayo and across Zimbabwe, highlighting ongoing concerns about the safety and rights of the LGBTQ+ community amid rising reports of gender-based and hate-related violence.
