MANCHESTER, England — Patrick Dorgu scored his first goal for Manchester United to secure a narrow 1–0 Premier League victory over Newcastle United, lifting spirits at Old Trafford on Friday, according to the Associated Press (AP).
The 21-year-old winger struck midway through the first half, unleashing a powerful left-footed volley from about 15 metres to settle an evenly contested match. The goal earned United their first home league win in four outings and moved them above Liverpool into fifth place, although the defending champions were set to play Wolves on Saturday.
“It was a good hit. I didn’t know I could do that,” Dorgu said after the match, as quoted by AP.
United were missing captain Bruno Fernandes, while several senior players were sidelined through injury or Africa Cup of Nations commitments. Manager Ruben Amorim fielded a reshuffled side in an unfamiliar back-four formation, but it was enough to withstand Newcastle’s pressure.
Dorgu’s strike was the standout moment in a balanced first half and marked his first goal in 38 appearances for United. However, the hosts suffered a setback at half-time when Mason Mount was forced off through injury, allowing Newcastle to assert greater control after the break.
The visitors created most of the second-half chances. Lewis Hall struck the crossbar with a long-range effort after 62 minutes, while Anthony Gordon fired wide from a promising position. Joelinton later tested United goalkeeper Senne Lammens with a fierce drive that was well saved.
United also had opportunities to extend their lead, with Diogo Dalot shooting over from close range when well placed. Neither side managed to add to the scoreline, and United held firm to claim all three points.
Amorim will take encouragement from the way his youthful side closed out the game. Five academy players were named on the bench, with England under-19 midfielder Jack Fletcher — the son of former United player Darren Fletcher — among those introduced in the second half. Twenty-year-old Ayden Heaven started in central defence, while fellow youngsters Leny Yoro and Tyler Fredricson also featured after the interval.
Newcastle’s defeat left them 11th in the table, six points behind United, following a difficult December in which they have won just once in five league matches.
“The second half was a lot better than the first from our perspective, but we didn’t do enough,” Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said, according to AP. “We dominated the ball and played with good rhythm, but the goal was missing. We’re hugely disappointed.”
United supporters, however, left Old Trafford buoyed by a hard-earned win and a breakthrough moment from one of the club’s emerging talents.
