LOS ANGELES — Rap superstar Nicki Minaj has deactivated her Instagram account, sparking widespread speculation that she lost as many as 10 million followers following recent political appearances and public statements. However, available data does not support claims of such a dramatic decline.

Minaj’s official Instagram account, @nickiminaj, which had more than 220 million followers, became inaccessible in recent days. The move followed her appearance at a Turning Point USA (TPUSA) event and a series of comments that many observers have interpreted as signalling a shift toward conservative political positions.

In recent months, Minaj has publicly voiced support for Christians in Nigeria, praised former US President Donald Trump and Senator JD Vance, and most recently appeared alongside Erika Kirk, the widow of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, at the AmeriFest conference. These actions prompted backlash from segments of her fan base, particularly on social media.

Rumours circulating online suggested that Minaj lost up to 10 million Instagram followers before deactivating her account. However, publicly available social media tracking data indicates a more modest decline. As of November 2025, Minaj’s Instagram following stood at approximately 227.5 million, compared with about 223.8 million in December 2025—a decrease of roughly 3 to 4 million followers.

While notable, analysts say such fluctuations are not unusual for accounts of that size and do not indicate an unprecedented exodus linked to a single event. There is currently no evidence to substantiate claims of a 10 million follower loss.

It also remains unclear whether Minaj permanently deleted her Instagram account or temporarily deactivated it. As of press time, the account is not visible on the platform, but deactivated accounts can typically be restored at any time.

Commenting on the controversy, Fox News legal analyst Emily Compagno said Minaj may have lost followers but had “gained the respect of many” for expressing her views openly. The remarks reflect a broader polarisation surrounding the artist’s recent public positioning.

Minaj has not issued an official statement addressing either the account deactivation or the speculation surrounding her follower numbers.

Whether the rapper’s social media retreat is temporary or signals a longer-term shift in how she engages with fans remains to be seen.
