Mariah Carey has finally addressed her long-standing feud with Eminem and the bizarre rumour that he wanted her to play his mother in 8 Mile, responding with a dismissive, “I really don’t care.”

The pop icon appeared on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live on Wednesday (October 1), where host Andy Cohen brought up the decades-old speculation during a segment of “Plead the Fifth.”

Cohen asked Carey if their feud began after Eminem allegedly approached her to portray his mother in the 2002 semi-autobiographical film 8 Mile. Carey didn’t deny the claim.
“From what I heard, there is truth to that,” she said. “But I don’t think that he actually—well, who knows who approached who.”

When pressed further on whether that incident sparked their falling out, Carey appeared indifferent.
“Um, no. I mean, maybe. It depends what he’s thinking,” she replied. “I really don’t care. Like, whatever he’s said, then I’m that, fine. Not really. But that’s a rap lyric.”

A Feud Spanning Two Decades

The tension between the two artists dates back to the early 2000s, when Eminem claimed he had a romantic relationship with Carey — a claim she has consistently denied. He referenced her in several songs, including “When the Music Stops” and “Superman.” Carey seemingly responded with her 2002 single “Clown,” which included the pointed lyric: “You should’ve never intimated we were lovers, when you know very well we never even touched each other.”

Their feud escalated in 2009 when Carey released the music video for “Obsessed,” which featured a stalker character widely believed to parody Eminem. The rapper fired back with “The Warning,” a scathing diss track that threatened to expose alleged voicemails and personal details.
“I’m obsessed now? Oh gee, is that supposed to be me in the video with the goatee?” Eminem rapped. “Wow Mariah, I didn’t expect her to go balls out.”

The Casting Rumour Resurfaces

The 8 Mile rumour resurfaced recently when producer Damion “Damizza” Young claimed on a podcast that he introduced Carey and Eminem, and that the rapper wanted her to play his mother — despite being just four years younger than her.
“She did not like that at all,” Young said. “Her insecurities kicked in big time.”

Ultimately, the role went to actress Kim Basinger, who is nearly twenty years older than Eminem.

During the same Watch What Happens Live episode, Carey also sidestepped questions about how much she earns annually from her festive hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You” and brushed off ex-husband Nick Cannon’s recent testicle insurance stunt with a wry, “Lord, help me.”
