Missy Elliott has revealed that her smash hit “Get Ur Freak On” almost never made it onto her 2001 album Miss E… So Addictive because longtime collaborator Timbaland was exhausted and ready to quit the studio session altogether.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, Elliott said the track was born out of a moment of frustration. Timbaland, drained after hours of work, began randomly striking keys on his equipment in a bid to wrap up the day.
“He just started hitting anything,” Elliott recalled. “He was bamming on the keyboard ’cause he was ready to go.”
But one of those improvised sounds caught her attention.
“He hit something and I was like, ‘That’s it right there.’ And he was like, ‘What? What you talking about?’ I just went in the booth and did the record,” she said.
As Elliott laid down her verses, she already had dancers in mind — a creative instinct shaped by years of touring with large, high-energy crews.
“I’ve spent so much time around dancers,” she said. “From my first time on tour, I had 22 dancers… When I’m doing that record, I’m thinking of my dancers. I could just see them moving to it.”
The last-minute gamble became one of the most defining records in modern music. In October, Rolling Stone named “Get Ur Freak On” the greatest song of the 21st century so far, cementing its influence across generations.
Elliott, whose most recent project was the 2019 EP Iconology, also hinted that new music is coming.
“I have something in the works,” she teased. “It’s just different. It’s me being experimental again… I got some stuff coming. Some fire.”
Released in 2001, “Get Ur Freak On” remains one of Elliott’s most celebrated and enduring tracks, a testament to creative persistence — even on the verge of calling it a day.
