HARARE – Robert Mugabe Jnr, the son of the late former president Robert Mugabe, was arrested this week on allegations of drug possession and spent the night in custody at Harare Central Prison.

According to police sources, Mugabe Jnr was stopped at a checkpoint after reportedly driving erratically. Officers said a search uncovered three sachets of dagga in his pockets.

He was taken into custody and appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court on Thursday morning. His court appearance attracted large crowds, with many curious onlookers gathering outside the courthouse.

The case has reignited debate around Zimbabwe’s deepening drug abuse crisis, particularly among youths and high-profile figures. Law enforcement agencies have recently intensified crackdowns on the distribution and use of illicit substances, with authorities linking drug abuse to rising crime rates and social instability.

Police spokespersons said more details would be released as investigations continue.
