BULAWAYO – Flashy businessman Wicknell Chivayo has splashed out about US$34 million on a long-range Gulfstream G550 private jet, further underlining his reputation for conspicuous displays of wealth.
Chivayo, 45, who made his fortune through lucrative state-linked contracts, revealed the purchase on social media, where he also disclosed the aircraft’s hefty price tag.
Flight tracking platform FlightAware lists the previous owner of the jet with tail number N550GA as Gulfstream Leasing, a United States-based company. It first went into service in 2012.
Powered by twin Rolls-Royce BR700 engines, the Gulfstream G550 has an intercontinental range of about 12,500 kilometres, allowing it to fly non-stop between continents. The aircraft typically carries 14 to 19 passengers, cruises at altitudes of up to 41,000 feet, and can reach top speeds of 941 km/h.
Although payment for the jet has been completed, aviation sources say the aircraft is expected to undergo interior customisation and possibly repainting ahead of its anticipated delivery in March.

Chivayo, a close associate of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has over the past year been travelling in a Bombardier Challenger 300. It remains unclear what will become of that aircraft once the Gulfstream enters service.
