JOHANNESBURG – In a landmark move aimed at accelerating digital inclusion across Africa, Google has entered into a strategic partnership with Cassava Technologies to make its advanced artificial intelligence (AI) platform, Gemini, more accessible to millions of people on the continent.
The collaboration seeks to remove two of the biggest barriers to AI adoption in Africa — high data costs and limited affordability — paving the way for broader participation in the global digital economy.
Under the partnership, Google will offer a six-month extended trial of the Gemini AI Plus Plan, allowing users to experience premium AI tools at no cost. Additionally, Cassava Technologies, through its vast network of connectivity and technology partners across Africa, will enable data-free access to the Gemini app, ensuring that users can explore and use AI services without worrying about internet charges.
The initiative is designed to empower students, entrepreneurs, small businesses, and innovators across Africa, helping them harness AI to enhance productivity, creativity, and learning. From helping small-scale traders improve marketing strategies, to assisting farmers in analysing crop data, and students in conducting research, the partnership promises to make AI a practical tool for everyday problem-solving.
Cassava Technologies said the partnership aligns with its mission to promote digital inclusion and economic growth across Africa. Google, on the other hand, reaffirmed its commitment to building an AI ecosystem that benefits developing economies and supports equitable technological progress.
