ENGLAND-born Zimbabwean referee Farai Hallam has written his name into the record books after taking charge of his first English Premier League match, officiating Manchester City’s 2–0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Etihad Stadium this Saturday.

The appointment marked a major milestone in the 32-year-old official’s career, who until now had officiated mainly in the EFL and domestic cup competitions.

The match itself saw City end a challenging run of results with goals from Manchester’s forward line, including an early strike by Omar Marmoush and a second just before halftime from Antoine Semenyo to secure the win.

However, the story of the day was not just the scoreline. Hallam found himself at the centre of controversy midway through the first half when he opted to overrule the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) after being advised to review a potential handball incident in the box.

VAR officials had signalled for Hallam to go to the pitch-side monitor following an apparent handball by a Wolves defender in the buildup to an attacking move, but after reviewing the footage, Hallam stood by his original decision and declined to award a penalty, a rare and bold choice for a referee in his debut match in the top flight.

The decision sparked immediate debate among pundits and supporters, with some praising Hallam’s confidence to trust his on-field judgment and others questioning the interpretations used.

Manchester City’s victory lifts them off the foot of the Premier League table and offers a timely boost in momentum, while Wolves remain in a difficult campaign.

Amid the sporting narratives, Hallam’s landmark debut and his handling of the VAR episode will be remembered as one of the defining talking points from this weekend’s English top-flight action.
