HARARE — The rapid rise of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools is changing the way students in Zimbabwe approach schoolwork, from assignments to exam preparation. While AI can be a powerful aid, it also raises questions about academic honesty and how to use it responsibly.
Here are some do’s and don’ts for Zimbabwean students using AI for learning:
Don’t Just Copy and Paste
AI chatbots can generate detailed answers, but simply copying their work for submission undermines your learning. Just as you wouldn’t copy a classmate’s essay or a textbook passage, you shouldn’t treat chatbot responses as your own.
“AI can help you understand concepts or generate ideas, but it should never replace your own thinking and effort,” advises the University of Chicago. “Always produce original work, and use AI tools for guidance, not as a substitute for doing the work yourself.”
In Zimbabwean schools and universities, teachers are increasingly aware that students have access to AI. Submitting work generated entirely by AI can lead to poor understanding of the subject and lower performance on exams.
Do Use AI as a Study Aid
AI can be extremely useful when used as a tutor or study buddy. For example, students can ask chatbots to explain complex topics, provide summaries, or brainstorm essay ideas.
Zimbabwean high school teacher Mr. Tendai Moyo recommends using AI to quiz yourself ahead of tests. “Upload your notes or key topics, and ask the AI to test your knowledge. It’s like having a personal tutor available anytime,” he says.
Students can also use AI for brainstorming research topics, generating outlines, or improving their understanding of difficult concepts — but they should still write and develop their work themselves.
Check Your School’s AI Policy
AI use is still new in Zimbabwean schools, so it’s important to know what your teachers allow. Some universities or secondary schools may have strict rules, while others may encourage AI for studying.
“Always clarify with your teacher or lecturer if AI use is allowed for a particular assignment,” says education consultant Dr. Rudo Chikowore. “Transparency avoids misunderstandings and helps you use AI responsibly.”
Don’t Hide AI Use
Many Zimbabwean students worry that mentioning AI might be seen as cheating. But honesty is essential. Teachers are increasingly open to discussions about AI, especially when students use it appropriately.
“Explain how you used AI — whether for summarising information or generating ideas,” says Dr. Chikowore. “This keeps the process transparent and maintains academic integrity.”
Give Credit and Follow Ethics
If you use AI to generate ideas, summaries, or supporting material, cite it in your work. Just as you would reference a book, website, or article, acknowledging AI maintains transparency and integrity.
“Always use AI tools with honesty and responsibility,” advises Oxford University guidance, which also applies to Zimbabwean students. “Critical thinking and ethical use are key.”
By using AI thoughtfully, Zimbabwean students can benefit from a modern study aid while still developing the skills, knowledge, and ethics needed for academic success.
