European Heavyweights Suffer Early Domestic Setbacks as Real Madrid and PSG Fall

MADRID/PARIS — Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain suffered their first domestic league defeats of the season on Friday, giving two of Europe’s biggest clubs an early reminder that their continental ambitions will be accompanied by significant challenges at home.

Real Madrid’s perfect start under José Mourinho was brought to an abrupt halt by a 1-0 defeat to Real Betis, while Paris Saint-Germain surrendered an early lead at home to Monaco to lose 2-1 in Ligue 1.

For Madrid, the defeat was particularly painful given the number of opportunities Mourinho’s side created. The Spanish giants struck the woodwork three times and appeared to have several chances to take control of the contest, only to be punished late in the game.

Troy Parrott proved to be the unlikely match-winner for Betis, converting the rebound in the 81st minute after Thibaut Courtois had denied Nelson Deossa with an excellent save.

Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain were dealt their first losses in their domestic leagues on Friday when Kylian Mbappé had an injury-time penalty saved in La Liga and PSG coughed up a lead in Ligue 1.

Madrid fell at Real Betis 1-0 for its first defeat since the return of coach Jose Mourinho.

PSG fell at home to Monaco 2-1 on the same day that coach Luis Enrique agreed to stay

Madrid pushed desperately for an equaliser. Kylian Mbappé saw another effort come back off the crossbar before Carlos Espí appeared to have levelled with an acrobatic finish, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time.

Vinícius Júnior was brought down inside the penalty area, giving Madrid a final opportunity to rescue a point. Mbappé stepped up from the spot but saw his effort saved by Betis goalkeeper Álvaro Valles, who preserved a famous victory for the hosts.

The result ended Madrid’s 100 percent league record and handed Mourinho his first defeat since returning for a second spell at the club. Betis moved level with Madrid on nine points after four matches.

PSG’s difficult league start continues

In Paris, PSG’s domestic problems deepened despite a day that had begun with positive news.

The club announced that Luis Enrique had agreed to extend his contract until 2030, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the coach who has overseen one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.

But the celebrations were short-lived.

PSG took the lead against Monaco through Marquinhos, but the visitors responded impressively. Flávio Nazinho equalised before Stanis Idumbo completed Monaco’s comeback to secure a 2-1 victory at the Parc des Princes.

The defeat leaves the defending European champions still searching for their first Ligue 1 victory of the campaign. Monaco, meanwhile, moved to the top of the French league after another impressive result under coach Filipe Luís.

Warning signs for Europe’s giants

The contrasting defeats highlight the difficulty of maintaining domestic dominance while competing on multiple fronts.

For Madrid, the immediate concern will be converting chances into goals, particularly after a match in which the side repeatedly came close but failed to find the net.

For PSG, the greater concern is consistency. Despite retaining much of the squad that has delivered unprecedented success under Enrique, the French champions have struggled to turn possession and attacking pressure into league victories.

Both clubs will now have to quickly reset. With the Champions League campaign approaching, neither Mourinho nor Enrique will want their domestic setbacks to become the beginning of a wider loss of momentum.

For two clubs accustomed to setting the pace rather than chasing it, Friday’s results provided an unusually early test of their ability to respond to adversity.
