HARARE – Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi is set to challenge his continued remand in connection with allegations of theft of trust property valued at US$2 million.
Mzembi’s lawyer, Killian Mandiki, told the court that an application will be filed on Monday, September 29, seeking his client’s release. The State is expected to respond on October 1, with Harare Regional Magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa scheduled to deliver a ruling on October 3.
The case, conducted virtually, involves accusations that Mzembi misappropriated televisions worth US$2 million. The equipment was originally purchased for the establishment of fan parks during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa but was allegedly diverted for his personal use.
Prosecutor Mercy Masamvi had requested that Mzembi remain in custody until October 14, pending his indictment at the High Court.
Mzembi’s legal challenge is the latest development in a case that has attracted significant public attention due to the high-profile nature of the accused and the substantial value of the property involved.
