WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump has suggested that Washington and Moscow are approaching a potentially significant agreement covering the war in Ukraine and broader European security, raising the prospect of negotiations extending beyond the immediate conflict.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Friday, Trump said discussions could produce an agreement involving not only Ukraine but also other European countries, although he provided no details about the proposed arrangements or a possible timetable.
“There’s going to be an agreement. It’s going to be a big agreement, and it’s going to involve more than Ukraine,” Trump said. He added that the proposed understanding could potentially involve “all of Europe”.
Describing the prospect in optimistic terms, the US president said it would be “a big, beautiful agreement” and suggested that all parties would welcome the outcome.
Trump’s comments, reported by Russia’s TASS news agency and carried in international coverage, point to the possibility of a broader diplomatic framework addressing the conflict and the security concerns that have shaped relations between Russia, the United States and European governments.
However, his remarks did not establish whether a formal agreement had been reached, identify the issues under negotiation or clarify which European governments might be involved. There was also no indication in the comments of any agreed concessions, security guarantees or arrangements concerning Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
Any settlement would face substantial diplomatic and political challenges. Ukraine’s government would have a central interest in decisions affecting its sovereignty, territory and long-term security, while European governments have repeatedly emphasised that the continent’s security arrangements cannot be determined without their participation.
For Moscow and Washington, a wider understanding could potentially address questions extending beyond the battlefield, including military security, strategic stability and the future relationship between Russia and Western countries.
Trump’s latest remarks therefore signal an ambitious diplomatic possibility rather than confirmation of an imminent settlement. Whether the reported progress can translate into an agreement acceptable to Ukraine, Russia, the United States and European partners remains uncertain.
