Zimplats Appoints Stanley Segula CEO as Alex Mhembere Retires

HARARE – Zimbabwe’s largest platinum producer, Zimplats Holdings, has appointed veteran mining executive Stanley Segula as chief executive officer, replacing Alex Mhembere after 19 years at the helm, in a leadership transition that comes as the company advances one of the country’s biggest mining investment programmes.

Mhembere, who joined Zimplats in 2007, is retiring from the chief executive position but will remain chairman of Zimbabwe Platinum Mines, the group’s operating subsidiary.

Segula, who has served as managing director since May 2015, brings more than three decades of mining experience to the position, having previously held senior operational roles including chief operating officer and senior general manager for mining.

The appointment signals continuity at a company whose investment strategy has increasingly focused on expanding mineral processing capacity, improving operational efficiency and strengthening Zimbabwe’s position in the global platinum-group metals industry.

Mhembere’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter for Zimplats, during which the miner committed to a US$1.8 billion investment programme announced in 2021.

The programme, among the largest mining investment commitments in Zimbabwe, encompasses underground mine development, processing infrastructure and expanded smelting capacity.

Its strategic importance extends beyond platinum production. Additional processing and smelting capacity could enable Zimbabwe to capture more value domestically from its mineral resources, although the economic benefits will depend on project execution, operating costs and international commodity prices.

Mhembere also oversaw the commissioning of a 35-megawatt solar power plant, the first phase of a planned 185MW renewable energy development.

The investment reflects the growing importance of reliable electricity supplies to Zimbabwe’s mining industry, where power interruptions and energy costs can materially affect production economics.

For Zimplats, developing dedicated renewable generation capacity offers a potential means of reducing exposure to electricity supply disruptions while supporting longer-term operating efficiency.

Segula’s elevation from managing director to chief executive places an experienced internal executive in charge of delivering the company’s existing investment commitments.

His extensive operational background could prove particularly important as the business balances mine development, capital expenditure and production efficiency against fluctuations in international platinum-group metal prices.

The leadership change also comes at a critical time for Zimbabwe’s mining sector, where policymakers are seeking to encourage mineral beneficiation, expand export earnings and attract long-term investment into processing infrastructure.

Zimplats’ expansion programme provides an important test of whether large-scale mining investments can translate into sustained industrial development and greater domestic value addition.

Mhembere’s continued involvement as chairman of the operating subsidiary may help preserve institutional knowledge during the transition, although the effectiveness of the new leadership structure will ultimately depend on clear management responsibilities and corporate governance.

For investors, the immediate focus will be on Segula’s ability to maintain operational performance, control costs and execute the group’s capital investment programme.

After nearly two decades under Mhembere, Zimplats is entering a new leadership era in which the principal challenge is not simply expanding platinum production, but ensuring that billions of dollars in investment deliver commercially sustainable returns.
