ZSE Rebounds as Mid-Caps Rally, but Thin Liquidity Keeps Investors Cautious

HARARE — Zimbabwe shares extended their recovery on Thursday, with the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange’s All Share Index rising 0.72% as mid-cap stocks attracted buying interest, although overall market activity remained subdued.

The All Share Index closed at 457.86 points, while the ZSE Top 10 advanced 0.41% to 448.82 points and the Top 15 gained 0.38% to 462.20 points. The Top 25 was also firmer, rising 0.63% to 497.45 points.

The market recorded 57 trades, generating turnover of ZWG4.48 million, while total market capitalisation increased to ZWG102.25 billion.

The strongest movement came from the Mid Cap Index, which climbed 1.88% to 527.83 points. The Small Cap Index was unchanged at 100.11 points.

Mid-caps drive the market rebound

Trading was led by a sharp advance in Turnall Holdings, whose shares rose 13.11% to 63 cents, while National Foods Holdings gained 12.48% to 92 cents. Tanganda increased 7.94% to 345 cents.

Delta Corporation advanced 1.99% to 2,938.82 cents, while Hippo Valley Estates edged 0.05% higher to 910.05 cents.

The gains suggest that investors were selectively rotating into counters where valuations, earnings prospects or sector-specific expectations offered perceived value, rather than displaying broad-based risk appetite across the exchange.

One market analyst who spoke to The Zimbabwe Financial Mail said the session reflected a market that was “selectively constructive rather than broadly bullish”.

“The headline indices are moving higher, but the number of trades and turnover tell us that liquidity remains relatively shallow. Investors are still being highly selective about where they commit capital,” the analyst said.

Sharp losses expose continuing volatility

The positive market direction was offset by heavy losses in several counters.

Rainbow Tourism Group fell 12% to 125 cents, while Mash Holdings declined 11.58% to 265.25 cents. African Risk and Insurance Services fell 4.45%, with Sable Chemical Industries down 1.98%.

First Mutual Holdings was marginally lower at 327.44 cents.

The sharp individual-stock movements underline the sensitivity of Zimbabwe’s relatively thin equity market, where comparatively modest trading volumes can produce substantial price movements in individual counters.

Agriculture and consumer stocks strengthen

Sector performance was mixed but generally positive.

The Agriculture Index gained 1% to 310.19 points, while the Modified Consumer Staples Index advanced 1.61% to 404.09 points. The Consumer Staples Index gained 1.63% to 301.79 points.

The Financials Index also strengthened, rising 0.76% to 544.71 points.

The Old Industrial Index gained 0.73%, while the Real Estate Index increased 0.23%.

However, the New Industrial Index slipped 0.33%, while the Consumer Discretionary Index suffered a 12% decline.

The mining sector remained unchanged, reflecting the absence of a broad move in mining counters during the session.

Real estate continues to attract interest

Real estate investment trusts remained comparatively resilient. TIG ZW rose 0.75% to 110.92 cents, taking its market capitalisation to approximately ZWG2 billion. REV ZW was unchanged at 200 cents.

The performance of listed property vehicles is significant in an economy where investors continue to look for assets capable of generating relatively predictable rental income and providing some protection against monetary and inflationary uncertainty.

A second analyst told The Zimbabwe Financial Mail that the resilience of listed property and selected consumer counters should be viewed against the broader search for “cash-generating assets”.

“Investors are increasingly looking beyond nominal share-price movements and asking which businesses can generate sustainable cash flows, maintain pricing power and preserve capital in the prevailing monetary environment,” the analyst said.

Liquidity remains the market’s biggest constraint

Despite Thursday’s gains, turnover of just ZWG4.48 million across 57 trades points to the structural liquidity constraints facing the ZSE.

The market has a relatively small institutional investor base, while the wider economy remains heavily reliant on informal economic activity and multiple monetary channels. These conditions make it difficult for the domestic capital market to achieve the depth normally associated with a fully functioning financial system.

For companies seeking long-term capital, however, the development of a deeper equity market remains strategically important. A liquid exchange allows businesses to raise permanent capital, provides price discovery and gives pension funds and other institutional investors a mechanism for deploying domestic savings into productive assets.

Corporate disclosures remain important

The market was also absorbing a series of recent corporate announcements, including First Mutual Holdings’ half-year unaudited financial results, Rainbow Tourism Group’s 2025 annual report, Delta Corporation’s annual report and a further cautionary statement from Meikles.

Hippo Valley Estates also announced a board appointment during the week.

Analysts said the quality and frequency of corporate disclosure would become increasingly important as Zimbabwe’s capital markets develop.

“The market ultimately needs information, liquidity and credible corporate governance. Price movements are only meaningful when investors have confidence that the underlying financial information is reliable and sufficiently timely,” the second analyst said.

A market still searching for depth

Thursday’s session therefore offered a mixed message. The principal indices recovered, mid-cap stocks produced strong gains and several sectors advanced, but the modest level of turnover showed that Zimbabwe’s equity market remains relatively shallow.

For the broader economy, the challenge is to convert financial-market stability into deeper capital formation. A stronger domestic capital market could help channel pension savings, insurance assets and corporate liquidity towards manufacturing, infrastructure, property and other productive investment.

For now, however, Thursday’s trading showed a market capable of producing selective gains without yet demonstrating the broad liquidity required for a sustained investment cycle.
