HARARE – The beleagauered Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume and former Harare South Member of Parliament Shadreck Mashayamombe were arrested on Wednesday by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc).
Details surrounding the arrests remain unclear, with Zacc yet to formally outline the charges the two are facing. Efforts to obtain an official comment from the anti-graft body were unsuccessful at the time of publishing.
Mafume, a senior official in the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has previously faced legal trouble linked to his tenure as mayor, although he has consistently denied wrongdoing. Mashayamombe, who also served as a CCC legislator, has in the past been implicated in various controversies, which he has similarly dismissed.
The arrests come amid continued scrutiny of public officials by Zacc, which has intensified investigations into alleged corruption involving local authorities and political figures.
More details are expected to emerge as investigations progress and the two appear in court.
