DALLAS, US – Zimbabwe-born entrepreneur Sulman Ahmed has built one of the United States’ expanding dental-care businesses, turning a single practice into a network of more than 150 clinics across seven states under the Ideal Dental brand.
Ahmed is the founder, chairman and chief executive of DECA Dental Group, whose growth has attracted investment from Blackstone, one of the world’s largest alternative investment firms. His ambition is to build a nationally recognised dental brand, using a business model centred on accessibility, extended opening hours and patient service.
According to D Magazine, Ahmed’s journey began in Harare, where he attended St George’s Catholic School before leaving Zimbabwe in 1997 to study in the United States. He initially enrolled at the University of North Florida and later transferred to the University of Texas at Dallas before completing dental school at Tufts University in Boston.
He returned to the Dallas area intending to establish his own practice. After an initial acquisition collapsed, he worked as an associate dentist before opening his first Ideal Dental clinic in Garland in 2008. Within 15 days, he had secured ownership of two practices, including one in Corinth.
The timing proved difficult. The global financial crisis weakened demand as unemployment rose and patients lost employer-sponsored dental insurance. Ahmed said the business was carrying about US$3 million in debt across his education, personal property and operations.
By the end of 2009, the company was struggling to meet payroll. Ahmed transferred US$25,000 from his remaining personal savings to ensure employees were paid, while considering the possibility of bankruptcy.

A partnership with dentist Shalin Patel helped reshape the business. Patel became DECA Dental’s first associate dentist and later its chief medical officer, helping establish the clinical and operational foundations for expansion.
The company subsequently grew beyond North Texas, attracting outside investment in 2015 and expanding into additional US markets. It continued opening clinics during the COVID-19 pandemic, including in Florida.
Blackstone’s investment marked a significant milestone, giving DECA Dental access to capital and expertise to support its expansion. The company has since maintained an aggressive growth strategy, with new Ideal Dental locations reportedly opening approximately every nine days.
Ahmed has described his ambition as building the “Starbucks of dentistry” – a widely recognised brand offering a consistent customer experience across multiple locations. The business has also sought to differentiate itself through clinician-led management, with Ahmed and Patel retaining central roles in its leadership.
The entrepreneur’s approach to growth has been shaped by his upbringing in Zimbabwe. He has spoken about the importance of initiative, adaptability and building relationships across different communities, having grown up speaking Urdu at home, English at school and Shona with friends.
Despite the scale of the business, Ahmed has maintained links with former classmates in Zimbabwe, while positioning DECA Dental for further expansion in the competitive US dental-care market.
His story illustrates how an immigrant entrepreneur has built a substantial American business from a difficult start, combining professional expertise with a model designed to scale beyond the traditional independent dental practice.
