TORONTO, CANADA — The Scotiabank Arena erupted in excitement on Sunday night (October 26) as Jamaican dancehall icon Vybz Kartel made his long-awaited Canadian debut — and fans got more than they bargained for when Drake stepped on stage for a surprise performance that sent the crowd into frenzy.
Kartel’s concert marked the first of three sold-out nights at the venue, making him the first Jamaican artist ever to achieve that feat in Toronto. Dressed head-to-toe in Toronto Blue Jays gear, the 49-year-old star kicked off the night with his remix of Akon’s “Locked Up,” wielding a baseball bat and donning a powder-blue jersey emblazoned with “Worl’ Boss” across the back.
“Canada, we’re here! Between songs, the Toronto native reflected on his early days, recalling time spent outside the now-closed Escape Nightclub, where he once dreamt of moments like this.

“Look at all these people — how much time we’ve spent with this man’s music right here,” Drake told the audience. “Tonight is not just about music. This is finally a man getting the flowers and love that he deserves. Welcome home.”
The emotional tribute capped off a night of historic significance. Presented by Drake’s OVO label, the concert continued the two artists’ growing partnership, which began earlier this year when Kartel joined Drake on stage at London’s Wireless Festival.
Kartel’s return to global stages follows a stunning legal turnaround. After nearly a decade behind bars for a 2014 murder conviction, his case was overturned in March 2024 due to juror misconduct. Released later that year, he wasted no time reclaiming his throne — earning a Grammy nomination and launching a world tour that has reignited his career.
