HARARE – Namib Minerals’ How Mine Reaches 1 Million Fatality-Free Shifts, Setting a New Benchmark for Zimbabwe’s Mining Sector

Namib Minerals’ How Mine has achieved a remarkable milestone of 1 million fatality-free shifts, underscoring its world-class safety culture and operational excellence.

In a press statement dated October 29, 2025, the company said the achievement reflects its employees’ and leadership’s unwavering dedication to maintaining a safe and caring work environment across its operations.

“At How Mine, we believe that zero harm is possible. Our safety protocols emphasise personal ownership, where every employee plays an active role in identifying risks, protecting one another, and ensuring everyone returns home safely,” said Ibrahima Sory Tall, Chief Executive Officer of Namib Minerals.

The mine’s achievement follows years of investment in proactive safety measures — including continuous training, employee engagement, and strengthened communication at all operational levels. These initiatives have created a shared culture of responsibility and vigilance, ensuring that safety remains central to productivity.

In recognition of its exemplary performance, How Mine was awarded Bronze in the Sectoral Awards for Occupational Safety and Health at this year’s NSSA Safety and Health at Work (SHAW) Conference, reaffirming its leadership in workplace safety standards.

How Mine’s success comes amid a period of renewed confidence in Zimbabwe’s mining and business environment, driven by rising mineral output, increased investor interest, and government efforts to enhance ease of doing business. The country’s mining industry — anchored by gold, lithium, platinum, and chrome — continues to attract both local and foreign capital, positioning Zimbabwe as a key player in Southern Africa’s resource-driven growth.

Industry analysts say that the sector’s ongoing digital transformation, commitment to sustainability, and workforce safety culture are strengthening its long-term prospects. The How Mine milestone not only sets a precedent for operational excellence but also reflects the broader resilience and potential of Zimbabwe’s mining economy.
