OpenAI boss Sam Altman has announced that ChatGPT will soon be able to hold erotic conversations with verified adult users who choose to switch on the feature.

The move, which Altman revealed on X, has caused quite a stir.

Altman explained that ChatGPT was originally made to be very cautious, especially when it came to mental health and sensitive topics.

“We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive,” he said, noting that this was to protect at-risk users. But he admitted the tight rules also made it “less enjoyable” for many.

Now, OpenAI believes it’s found a safer balance. Thanks to new tools, filters and age checks, Altman says the company will soon relax some of those limits, giving adults more freedom to shape how ChatGPT behaves.

In the next few weeks, OpenAI will release a new version of ChatGPT that can act more human, use emojis, or even sound like your chatty best friend if you want it to.

In December, verified adults will be able to choose an optional “mature mode” that includes erotica.

Altman described it as part of OpenAI’s plan to “treat adult users like adults”. He also promised the feature would only appear if users ask for it.

The announcement shows how fast the AI companion trend is growing.

Rival platforms like Elon Musk’s Grok already offer flirty, friend-style chatbots, and OpenAI clearly doesn’t want to be left behind.

Not everyone’s convinced this is a great idea. Some critics worry about the emotional risks of forming deep or romantic bonds with AI companions. Others fear that even with age checks, minors could still find loopholes.

Either way, it seems the age of “talking to your AI” about almost anything is officially here.

Whether that excites or alarms you might just depend on what kind of conversations you’ve been missing.
