HARARE — Harare Municipal Police have arrested street vendors selling roasted maize and other wild fruits in the central business district, as part of a citywide operation to improve sanitation.
According to council officials, the vendors have been contributing to blocked drainage systems, which exacerbate flooding during the rainy season. The council also cited littering as a persistent problem linked to street vending.
“Shockingly, our officers discovered that vendors hide their maize and other products in dirty drainage channels,” the City of Harare said in a statement. “Residents are urged to stop purchasing maize from the streets, as this may pose health risks, including cholera.”
The operation is part of broader efforts by the city to maintain cleanliness and prevent public health hazards.
