24 perish in ZUPCO, Unifreight buses accident

MUTOKO – 24 people have died while several others were injured in an accident, involving two buses, near the 35 kilometre peg along the Harare-Nyamapanda highway this Sunday morning.

The two buses, one belonging to Unifreight, now Pioneer, and another to ZUPCO side swiped, killing 21 people on the spot.

Three others were reported dead on their way to hospital.

Chief police spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said 46 people were seriously injured and taken to Parirenyatwa and Harare hospitals.
The Unifreight bus was on its way to Harare while ZUPCO was heading to the opposite direction.

Eye-witnesses attributed the accident to speeding by both drivers.

They called on relevant authorities to put signs for motorists to reduce speed at the place which they say is a blind spot.

Research conducted by the Zimbabwe Transport and Allied Workers Union has shown that  non-adherence to labour laws in the transport sector is the major cause of road accidents as drivers work for long hours.
