Magaya Followers Vow Continued Loyalty To Rape Accused Cleric

Bulawayo,— Embattled Prophetic, Healing and Deliverance (PHD) ministries founder, Walter Magaya’s followers say they will continue supporting the popular preacher who has been accused of raping a church congregate.

Magaya was last Friday arrested in Harare for allegedly raping a 25 year-old female congregant.

He was granted $2,000 bail when he appeared Saturday before Harare magistrate Vakayi Chikwekwe.

He was further ordered to surrender his passport, not to interfere with witnesses and report at Harare Central Police Station three times weekly as part of his bail conditions.

However, the serious accusations levelled against him could not deter his Bulawayo followers from keeping their loyalty to him.

Magaya’s followers say the accusations were the work of the devil bent on tarnishing his image.

“We are not moved by this at all. We know that this is the work of the devil and we will stand by our leader,” one female member who identified herself as Sister Nompilo said.

Another female member, Patience Lunga, said Magaya was being persecuted for standing for the poor.

“Magaya is our spiritual father and we warn anyone trying to tarnish his image that they will face the wrath of God. He is helping us a lot, both spiritually and materially,” she said.

Magaya on Wednesday last week launched a housing project in Bulawayo which aims to build 5000 housing units in the city as he continues to make inroads into the business world.

The ambitious project, which is part of his mega-housing plan to deliver over 90 000 houses countrywide for his church members in Zimbabwe and abroad, was attended by government officials and members of the local business community.

If convicted, Magaya could join jailed cleric and Independent End Time Message founder Robert Martin Gumbura who is serving a 40 year jail term for raping his female congregants.
