Mujuru’s People First Tastes Zanu PF Violence

Murehwa,– Ousted Vice President and once top Zanu PF official, Joice Mujuru has tasted violence from her former party after a house belonging to one of her followers in politically volatile Murehwa area was torched by suspected Zanu PF activists recently.

According to the Centre for Community Development in Zimbabwe (CCDZ), James Jowa, who is People First local ward coordinator, also lost property when his home was burnt down by suspected Zanu PF activists aligned to Murehwa South MP, Joel Biggie Matiza.

Matiza is also party chair for Mashonaland East province.

“Jowa’s assailants accused him of being a ‘Gamatox’ and belonging to the People First party,” said the NGO.
“The unknown assailants also wrote the message “pasi neGamatox” (down with Gamatox), on the walls of the torched house.”

Gamatox is a derogatory term used to refer to a group of former Zanu PF politicians aligned to Mujuru.

Mujuru was dislodged from Zanu PF last year together with several party bigwigs for allegedly leading an elaborate plot by some party heavy weights to topple President Robert Mugabe .

She has denied the allegations and has never been brought before any hearing to test the claims.

Said the CCDZ, “We strongly condemn these criminal acts and call upon the law enforcement agents to carry out thorough investigations and bring the perpetrators of political violence to book.

“We also urge then Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) to carry out independent investigations to expose such criminal activities.”

In 2008, Murewa was one of the hotspots of political violence which was instigated mainly by Zanu PF followers who included militant war veterans and youths against opposition supporters.

CCDZ said it has witnessed increased political tensions and intra-party violence within Zanu PF past few weeks in a province where Mujuru hails from. – Radio VOP
