A 15-YEAR-OLD Form One pupil at a secondary school in Buhera did the unthinkable when he waylaid six primary school girls on their way home from school and raped them all – one-after-the-other – in a sexual abuse case that shocked the education fraternity in the district.
The suspect, who cannot be named as he is a minor, was facing six counts of rape when he appeared before Rusape regional magistrate, Mr Livingstone Chipadza, who found him guilty of committing the crimes.
Although the seemingly unremorseful teenager had denied ever raping the minors, the State led by district public prosecutor, Mr Tirivanhu Mutyasira presented overwhelming evidence that warranted a conviction. Because of his young age, Mr Chipadza sentenced him to receive six strokes that will be administered at Rusape Prison with three years wholly suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence in the next five years. The court heard that the crimes were committed on February 1 this year.
“On the day in question, the first complainant aged five was walking along a footpath in the company of her five friends. The suspect saw the girls, approached them and ordered them to stop. Out of fear, they complied and stopped. He instructed all of them to lie down and then raped the first complainant while the other girls watched.
“After raping her, he went on to the next complainant aged six and raped her again. He moved to the next four-year-old complainant and raped her also,” said Mr Mutyasira.
He proceeded to rape the last three complainants aged six, four and five.
“After the act he threatened the girls if ever they were going to divulge what happened to anyone. However, a certain boy witnessed the whole incident from a distance and went to report the matter to the mother of one of the complainants. A police report was made leading to his arrest,” said Mr Mutyasira.
The six girls were sent to Murambinda Mission Hospital for medical examination where it was confirmed that they had been sexually abused.
