KWEKWE – President Emmerson Mnangagwa today commissioned the state-of-the-art Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa Midlands State University (MSU) Law School in Kwekwe, presiding over a landmark graduation ceremony held away from the institution’s main Gweru campus for the first time.

More than 6,000 graduands and their families gathered at the new campus to witness the President, who is also Chancellor of all state universities, confer degrees during MSU’s 26th graduation ceremony.

Modern Legal Training Hub

Built on land donated by the Kwekwe City Council, the two-storey law school is equipped with cutting-edge facilities, including a moot court, e-library, lecture theatres, a medical centre, student accommodation, staff residences and over 100 rooms designed for teaching and research. The school will also house the Faculties of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the Built Environment, transforming the surrounding rural landscape into a growing commercial hub.

The road linking Kwekwe’s central business district to the campus has been upgraded, improving access for farmers, students and local commuters.

Milestone for Legal Education

Named after President Mnangagwa, a lawyer by profession, the facility is expected to give law students practical experience in court procedures and advanced legal research, strengthening Zimbabwe’s capacity to train legal professionals.

University at 25

The event coincides with MSU’s silver jubilee. Established by an Act of Parliament in 1999, the university has grown to more than 23,000 students and over 2,000 staff across six campuses and ten faculties. It has produced more than 80,000 graduates and was ranked 18th out of 129 universities by Times Higher Education in 2024.

Guided by a mission to drive innovation under the national Heritage-based Education 5.0 initiative, MSU aims to contribute to Zimbabwe’s goal of becoming an upper-middle-income economy by 2030.

Official Unveiling

During the ceremony, President Mnangagwa unveiled the commissioning plaque and toured the new law school, describing the development as a significant boost to legal education and a testament to MSU’s expanding academic reach.

The President lauded the university’s commitment to producing skilled graduates who can serve Zimbabwe’s judicial system and the broader national development agenda.
